Zamek i ogród Lowther - niezwykłe miejsce w rejonie jezior angielskich / The Lowther Castle & garden - an unusual place in the Lake District of English

Spośród wielu pięknych miejsc w angielskim rejonie jezior, Zamek Lowther jest jedną z najbardziej intrygujących atrakcji turystycznych.

Zbudowany został na przełomie XIX i XX wieku, na miejscu dwóch poprzednich domów - XIV wiecznej fortyfikacji obronnej i rezydencji z XVII wieku.

Architektem tego nowego domu był Robert Smirke, który stworzył nową imponującą rezydencję w stylu średniowiecznego zamku, włączając wcześniej zniszczone domy.  

(Robert Smirke zaprojektował British Museum w Londynie kilka lat później).

 

Zmiany społeczne w XX wieku spowodowały, że świetny czas tej wiejskiego rezydencji skończył sie. Zamek Lowther został zamknięty w 1936 roku, a ogród został wybrukowany betonem. Dach został usunięty w 1957 roku. I z tej wielkiej rezydencji pozostały tylko ściany z pustymi pokojami, i ogród w którym hodowano kurczaki. 

Fasada i zewnętrzne ściany pozostały niezmienione przez ponad pół wieku. Ale upływ czasu i zaniedbanie wpłynęły bardzo na wygląd całej rezydencji

Dopiero założenie fundacji charytatywnej odwróciło ten proces. Zamek został otwarty w 2011 roku; w dalszym ciagu odbywają się tutaj prace konserwatorskie w zamku, jak i prace w ogrodzie.

Ale jest wystarczająco dużo, aby zobaczyć jak niezwykły jest ten budynek i jak niezwykłe będzie zwiedzanie ogrodów po zakończeniu wszystkich prac. 

Ogrody w Lowther są warte odwiedzenia nawet bez atrakcji zamku. Aktualnie trwają prace w części ogrodów i które są przywracane do dawnej świetności. 

W każdym odnowionym ogrodzie znajduje się tablica informacyjna, często ze starymi zdjęciami pokazującymi jak wyglądał ogród, lub z  planami pokazującymi jak będzie ta część wyglądała. 

Gardens in Lowther are worth a visit even without the castle's attraction. Currently, works are underway in some gardens and they are restored to their former glory.

In every renovated garden there is an information board, often with old photographs showing what a garden looked like, or with plans showing how this part would look like.

Białe Trillium rosnące dziko w zaniedbanym ogrodzie zamku Lowther, teraz zostały przeniesione do głównego ogrodu.

Of the many beautiful places in the English Lake District, the Lowther Castle is one of the most intriguing tourist attractions.

It was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, on the site of two previous houses - the 14th century defensive fortifications and residences from the 17th century.

The architect of this new home was Robert Smirke, who created a new impressive residence in the style of a medieval castle, including previously destroyed houses.

(Robert Smirke designed the British Museum in London a few years later).

Social changes in the 20th century meant that the great time of this country residence ended. The Lowther Castle was closed in 1936, and the garden was paved with concrete. The roof was removed in 1957. And from this great mansion there were only walls with empty rooms, and a garden in which chickens were bred.

The facade and exterior walls have remained unchanged for over half a century. But the passage of time and neglect greatly affected the appearance of the entire mansion

The founding of a charitable foundation reversed this process. The castle was opened in 2011; there are further conservatory works in the castle as well as works in the garden. 

But there is enough to show how extraordinary this building is and how amazing it will be to visit the gardens after all the work has been completed.
